1) Define the term 'Absolute Monarch'in your own words. Make sure that you include the termspower, control & divine right.
An absolute monarch is a monarch that had been given the divine right to rule, a right that had been given by God. Not only do they have the authority to control the state, but they also have absolute power over the people.
2) List the major events of Louis XIV’s reign using a timeline (example below). Use your textbook (pgs 138-143)/online (162-168) to help you. Identify which events on your timeline strengthened the French Monarchy and which events weakened it. Make sure you explainwhyit strengthened/weakened the French Monarchy.
Timeline of Louis XIV's reign (1643 - 1715) Events that strengthened the French Monarchy
a. Anti-Mazarin riots ending
Because of the riots that were caused by the anti-Mazarins, Louis XIV had never forgotten his fear and fury towards them, and that had motivated him to become very powerful so that they could not threaten him again.
b. Louis XIV invades Spanish Netherlands
Louis XIV invaded Spanish Netherlands to expand the French lands, and he was successful in doing so.
Events that weakened the French Monarchy
a. The Cancellation of the Edict of Nantes
Cancelling the Edict of Nantes that was made before Louis XIV's rule had made him lose many skilled workers, for that edict had protected the religious freedom of Hugenots.
b. War of the Spanish Succession
This was a costly war, and France had to give some of its lands to Great Britain. This war dragged on for a long time, giving France more problems to worry about.
3) After reading, use the definition you came up with in #1 and explain: a. The ways in which Louis XIV fits the description
Louis XIV had the absolute power to do whatever he wanted; he had total control over his people. The Sun King even said, "L'etat, c'est moi!", which means "I am the state". Claiming that he is the state, this is absolutism in the form of a claim.
b. Any ways in which Louis XIV does not fit the description
Louis XIV gave power to the intendents; he was not the only one who had power. Although the intendents were not given absolute power, they were still given power.

1) What is absolutism?
Absolutism is a theory of kingship, or the acceptance in which the monarch ruled its state with absolute power (sovereignty) .
2) Explain the justification for absolutism referred to as the 'divine right of kings'.
The justification for absolutism referred to as the 'divine right of kings' is that the monarch following absolutism is given the divine right to rule from God. In other words, they believe that God had given the ruler the right to be an authority, and the monarch's words are the law. If they challenged the ideas and words of the monarch, then that means they are challenging God.
3) List the causes of the rise of Absolutism in Europe.
First, the people were ready to accept a monarch who could settle the state from the chaos, the consequences suffered from the disastrous 14th century.
Second, secular individuals (papacy) demanded for a ruler
4) In your opinion, is absolutism a good way to rule? Can you think of a situation where it might be a positive thing?
I do not believe that absolutism is a good way to rule. Although absolutism could restore chaos in the state that is being ruled, but that does not mean it is the best way to rule. Marxism, a political theory derived from Karl Marx, is basically all about leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned, and each individual is is paid according to their abilities and needs. However, the satirical novel written by George Orwell, Animal Farm, heavily implied that this idea does not work, for there are people who thirst for power in the end. There are many other ways of absolutism, but I still believe that this is not a good way to rule. However, when there is war, I think this situation might be a positive thing for absolutism. During war and after war, when things are in a chaotic mess, then I believe that such situations would be a positive thing.

1. Why have people decided to Occupy Wall Street, and other financial areas in major cities the world over?
People decided to Occupy Wall Street and other financial areas in major cities because of financial greed and corruption of the government. Because of their lack of freedom and disadvantage towards the system in which 1% of the population benefits from working and have no problems with living, while 99% of the people are unemployed and houses in foreclosure. Financial areas in major cities would help the protestors to divert the attention of the government, voicing out their complaints and reasons to why they are engaged in this protest.
2. Who might oppose those who are occupying Wall Street or demonstrating? Why are they opposing them?
Government officials, politicians, and those with a lot of money might oppose those who are occupying Wall Street. Some politicians are against this protest, saying that the protestors should blame themselves for not being rich and have a job, while some others believe that it's unproductive. Some of the rich would probably be skeptical towards these protests, the gap between the rich and the poor being massive.
